The 5 Body Types: Inverted Triangle

Inverted Triangle

There are two things that can drastically change the quality of your wardrobe. One is knowing what your best colors are, and the other is knowing your body type and how to dress it. One of the biggest problems with buying online or buying an item you saw your favorite influencer wear is that they most likely don’t have the same body type as you; therefore, it won’t fit you the same. Today, we’ll be discussing one of the five different body types and the best ways to dress for it. And remember, everybody type has different ways of manifesting. You can wear a size two or a size 16 and still be the same body type.

The first body type that will be discussed is the inverted triangle or women who are top-heavy. Being top-heavy or an inverted triangle means the upper part of your body protrudes out farther than your waist, hips, or thighs. This can take the form of broad shoulders or large breasts that protrude outward, making it the widest point of their body. There are many famous celebrities who are Inverted triangles. Some examples include:

As you can see, Wendy Williams is a classic inverted triangle rocking all boobs but no hips. Her chest is the widest part of her frame, making her a top-heavy woman. Angelina Jolie is also a famous inverted triangle, but instead of her breast being the most prominent body part, her broad shoulders are the widest.

How to Dress This Body Type

As a personal stylist, the main goal when dressing an inverted triangle is to soften the upper part of the body. We want to do this so that we bring attention away from the most prominent area, the upper body, and create more interest at the bottom to balance out the frame. V-neck tops and dresses are going to be your best friend. You almost can’t go wrong with a v-neck as an inverted triangle because it opens up the chest creating visual breathing room. Another great neckline is a cowl neck. Similar to the v-neck, it opens up the chest, exposing skin. If you’re bustier, the cowl neck can pose as a difficult top to pull off because a heavier chest can cause a lot of unnecessary pulling. For date night, an off-the-shoulder top will also suit the inverted triangle well by exposing all that skin. Necklines you’ll want to avoid are boatneck and other sharp, angular designs.

For the bottom, we want to draw more attention to it since the widest area is on top. Any skirt or pants with volume, brighter colors, or patterns is a safe route to go. Bell bottoms, flare pants, wide legs, tiered skirts, etc. suit your body type. Please, please, please, avoid wearing skinny, dark-colored pants or pencil skirts. Darker colors recede, which is the exact opposite of what we want for an inverted triangle.

This is exactly what we want for an inverted triangle body type. A softening V neckline with some interest at the bottom half of the dress. The neckline also does not half to go as low if you don’t want it to.

Loving this off-the-shoulder top and wide-leg cropped pants. The fact that it’s brighter than the shirt is a bonus because it brings even more attention to the bottom of the body, creating balance for an inverted triangle figure.

An off-the-shoulder moment is not for the inexperienced fashionista. The style has to be very specific. Anything with too puffy of a sleeve, a heart-shaped neckline, or anything too busy can make the off-the-shoulder top hard to work with for the inverted triangle body type. Sticking to a simple straight across the top is your safest best.

This is another great example of a balancing outfit for this body type. The V-neck gives visual breathing room for the eyes and softens the upper part of the body while the pants provide interest with the volume and vibrant pattern.

Pieces To Avoid

Along with items that look amazing on this body type, there are also pieces that an inverted triangle should steer clear from. Boat neck tops are your enemy. They are not for you because they will only emphasize the broadness of your upper body and draw attention there, which is the exact opposite of what we want to do. On the other end, we want to draw more attention to the bottom half of the body. Therefore, wearing skinny and tight bottoms, especially in black, is not going to work well since darker colors recede. If you don’t love a wide leg, then flare, bell bottom, and straight-leg pants in brighter colors and patterns are an alternative. A form-fitting skirt with a slit draws attention to the bottom of you to create balance which is something we want.

Summary
